Kaikoura is a beautiful small town on the east coast of the South Island, New Zealand. It’s only a 2-hour coach journey from Picton Ferry terminal, so, the perfect place to start exploring the island. It’s popular amongst tourists for whale watching and fishing tours, and is also home to a huge colony of seals that relax on the coastline. I fell in love with this place, the huge mountain ranges overlooking the town, friendly locals, and the seafood; it’s a haven for crayfish and lobster.

During my time in Kaikoura I stayed at the 4-star Bella Vista motel, just a short walk from the town centre and local i-Site (incredibly helpful tourist information office). Within 10 minutes you’re on the beach, and the amazing mountains dominate the skyline as you open up your curtains in the morning.

Bella Vista Motel facilities

The motel provided laundry facilities, free WiFi Internet, and breakfast is available on request. The room was cleaned daily, which caught my attention because most hotels that I have stayed in do not clean the room at all during your stay. The staff were incredibly friendly, and it was the perfect place to explore and relax after a hectic six weeks of travelling through New Zealand.

All of the rooms have a microwave and hot stove; so, you’re able to save money by purchasing food at the local supermarket that is only ten minutes walk from the motel. The room had a flat screen TV, with lots of channels; perfect for a cosy night in, sat on the comfortable seating in the room.

Nearby in Kaikoura town centre

Within the town centre there are a few bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops, basically everything you need to have a comfortable stay in Kaikoura. I am going to miss Kaikoura, it is one of the highlights of my trip through New Zealand and I highly recommend staying at the Bella Vista motel while visiting the area.
